Ahem,

I find it happens a lot in the hetalia fandom that Russia has a misjudgment on his character, and while he is not the only one (England is not a pussy uke, France is not a Rapist) He tends to be a pretty darn pointed out. Along with his character, there is a cross into character relations.

I need to clear up Russia and Prussia’s relations.

These nation’s are doomed to walk this earth forever. It would be a lonely place if they were to harbor grudges forever.

First off, Russia though.

In the first volume of the manga, Russia is stated to be big hearted and innocent on the outside, but childishly cruel inside. This is due to the fact that his history is bathed in bloodshed and tragedy. In a recent profile from the third volume of the published manga, Russia was described as gentle and naive, and not malicious, but scary. Though he is capable of being incredibly cruel-minded, Russia himself is unaware of it, and truly means well. His bosses have always told him to ‘make friends by force’, so he was taught to take advantage of the other nations. Russia bosses were pretty unreasonable with their demands too, and Russia would have no choice but to comply, because to punishments were often worse. For instance, Russia was told to stop a tank with his own body, to which he did. Russia wasn’t only bullied by his bosses though, as a child, he was constantly being harassed by the Mongols, the Teutonic Knights, and the Vikings. Because of this, Russia mind was always on making friends, though his attempts never really worked. Throughout the series though, Lithuania is seen to have one of the closest relationship with Russia. And has been with him through a lot. Latvia and Estonia seem to be quite further away though, Estonia even calling him a creep, and defending the Nordics Christmas blog. (Though Estonia also has a man crush on the Nordics and has wanted to join them for years.) Though Russia is seen pressing on Latvia’s head, and ‘Stretching’ him, I have a lot of doubt that Russia would be abusive or beat them. It’s simply not in his nature. (Don’t get me started on the god damn eye eating business.)

Russia tries his best to keep his people happy, even with their governments state, though his efforts don’t pay off, as his people don’t like him regardless. In 1905, despite his efforts and hardship, his people rebelled, and he was left without a choice to ‘fix’ the situation himself. (this is referred to as the ‘bloody Sunday Russia’ piece.)

I could probably ramble on A LOT more about Russia, but I’m going to move on to Russia and Prussia.

The following is based on the characters from the Hetalia’s point of view and actual history of the two. These thing coincide and are both important to any hetalian.

They fought on opposite side during the War of the Austrian Succession, but the war saw both grow in power. Russia defeated Sweden and Prussia defeated Austria.

They again were on opposite side during the Seven Year’s War. However when the Tsar Peter III came to power he signed the Treaty of Saint Petersburg and made peace with Prussia, allowing the Prussian king Frederick the Great to concentrate on other enemies.

Prussia and Russia then cooperated to carve up Poland-Lithuania between them.

Both Russia and Prussia had absolute monarchies that reacted sharply against the French Revolution and were part of the coalition against the new French regime during the French Revolutionary Wars and later the Napoleonic Wars. Prussia was shaken by the Revolutions of 1848 but was able to withstand the revolutionaries’ call to war against Russia. Prussia did go to war with Denmark, however, and was only stopped by British and Russian pressure.

Prussia’s successes in the Wars of German Unification owed much to Russia’s lack of involvement. The creation of the German Empire, however, greatly changed the relations between the two countries.

So, they were equals to each other. Helping one another grow and bully the other nations.

After world war two, Prussia, which at the time was East Germany, was taken under control of the Soviet Union. Many Hetalian throw Russia out as a villain here, but that’s where we become wrong. Russia is not the one solely responsible for the dissolution of Prussia.

Prussia lived with Russia at this time, not Germany, this is, for those who don’t know, the time of the Berlin wall. When the wall came down, there was no barrier between east and west Germany. (Yes, Prussia refers to Germany as west, being West Germany. Mind blown) Though the dissolution of Prussia was the verdict given by the winning Allied forces. They claimed that Prussia was  the bane of modern German and European history. They blamed Prussian culture because it stifled and marginalized the more liberal cultures of the German south and thus laid the foundations for political extremisms and dictatorship…Nazism. Its habit of authoritarianism, servility and obedience prepared the ground for the collapse of democracy and the advent of Nazi dictatorship. In other words, they blamed Prussia and its culture and what they perceived to be what Prussia stood for as the reason for abolishing/dissolving it.

(Back to our Gilbert though)

Prussia would have hated Russia at this time. He was taken from his younger brother, stripped of his Glory and left for dead in a freezing wasteland. Russia would have known this fully well, but he would have also been aware of the probable doom of Prussia, if he were to return to the west. There was a huge chance he could have disappeared in Germany’s arms. Thankfully Germany and Prussia appear to ‘Share one heart’. (Prussia stated he and his brother have a wall in their hearts)

It was stated that Prussia was stuck doing unprofitable jobs while at Russia’s house as East Germany. Though Prussia has stated that he hates Russia to the point of ‘Losing four eyelashes’ or puking blood, this is wildly exaggerated. (that’s our little Prussian drama queen though)  Despite this, he might be less afraid of Russia than others, as he explained that Germany’s become so strong he’s not freaked out by Russia as much anymore, and that he’s sometimes meddlesome towards him and his neighbors. Russia used to be bullied by Prussia when they were children, however more recently Russia was the one imposing himself on Prussia, wanting to befriend him. In the strips depicting the Battle of Lake Peipus, young Russia is shown to be very angry at the Teutonic Knights’ carelessness in regards to their movement to attack on the lake, despite that it was covered in thin ice and that Russia had warned him not to, strangling him while he attempted scolding him.  He is also seen wanting to befriend Prussia when they were children, writing in is diary ‘Hopefully next time the Teutonic’s come they will be friends and not enemies.’ Russia also asks Ukraine how to make friends, but its no use, as she tells him to show them his boobs. (Russia’s little bubby nipples).

Russia seems to want to befriend him in modern times too, and he was somewhat friendly towards him during his April Fools blog, especially when he mentioned that he napped at Greece’s house where it was warm, and when he went to bed, wishing him good night and asking him if it was warm when he did so. While Prussia had, initially responded negatively, he seemed to calm down regarding Russia’s presence on his blog over time. Prussia has been stated to occasionally get Ostalgic and, when he gets Ostalgic enough, Russia will appear to impose himself on him. (Ostalgie is a German term referring to nostalgia for aspects of life in East Germany. It is derived from the German words Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia). )

Russia and Prussia have been through a lot, they’ve grown, fought and grieved side by side.with all that these nations have been through together, the same way that France and England throw blows at each other, Prussia would poke fun at or be rude to Russia, but if someone who didn’t know Russia, judged him based on there ignorance and belittled or tried bully Russia, Prussia, Prussia would probably tell them to piss off. They might not seem close to the naked eye, but they’d always have each others backs. Sure, they’ll fight, but that’s what people do, especially nations. These nation’s are doomed to walk this earth forever. It would be a lonely place if they were to harbor grudges forever.

This has been a little PSA on Russland. He doesn’t beat his ‘Friends’ and he doesn’t rape Prussia. And Prussia is Prussia, between him and France he’s a walking drama boat. Thanks for reading.
